Two days after the 26-section Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Toll Brothers’ Gowanus development was released, the City Planning Department has approved certified the developer’s application to rezone the area, according to the Brooklyn Eagle. The three-acre project would transform the formerly industrial area into “residential and other uses and a publicly-accessible waterfront open space. The proposed project would be a privately sponsored redevelopment project on the Gowanus Canal waterfront,” they report, with “577 units of housing — 447 of them market rate and 130 of them (20 percent) affordable — plus 2,000 square feet of retail, 2,000 square feet of community space and 260 underground parking spaces.” Finally, those images of hipsters strolling along the murky green water of the Canal will be realized. That is, if all goes well with the ULURP (Uniform Land Use Review Process). The first public hearing should occur at the September 26th CB6 meeting. Anybody planning to attend, and, if so, what will you have to say about the project?

  1. It’s off-topic, but Georgia, how is the change in street cleaning regulations destroying your life? Maybe Brownstoner needs to start a new thread, or maybe we need to move this to the forum, cause Community Board 6 is almost done and Community Board 2 is next. I’m interested in first-hand observations.

  2. I wonder how much they would selling parking spots for. Parking will be a nightmare when/if this is built. Meanwhile, the change from two days/week to one day a week alternate side parking has destroyed my life – is anyone else suffering end-of-easy-parking trauma in the hoyt-gowanus area of CG?

  3. All of the coast is in a flood zone. As the Eagle article states, “…to reduce the potential for flood damage or impacts on residential structures, the lowest occupied floor elevation would be constructed above the 100-year base flood elevation.” The 260 “underground parking spaces” have a real chance of becoming underwater parking spaces.

    It’s always DCP and never CPD.

    And DCP “certified” the ULURP application (as complete). Any “approval,” even those that are advisory, occurs during ULURP.
