Williamsburg is getting close to having its own movie theater, as evidenced by these images from Curbed yesterday. The development will feature a 168-seat theater with cafe and cabaret topped by a nine-unit residential portion with a “custom zinc and cut glass facade.” Target opening date: Spring ’09.

  1. yes i remember the Commodore! It was actually a nice theater if you like old style theaters (although pretty dirty). I was pretty young but if i remember correctly the crowd was smoking weed and talking back to the screen. I think it would have had some potential if they hadn’t torn it down.

  2. This is welcome, though as werner pointed out, there are multiple other places to see movies in Williamsburg/Greenpoint–Union Docs, East Coast Aliens, Hugs, etc., as well as outdoor screenings in the summer.

It would be great if this place got a wine/beer license. There are some arthouse cinemas in Portland that let you have a drink and it is soooo nice.

  3. looking forward to this opening. i might actually start seeing movies in theaters again now that one is so close to me. especially if the MTA is going to run fewer trains late at night, i’d rather stay local.

  4. they probably figured since it’s such a quite and easy commute right to union square it wasnt necessary? it is nice to walk to a movie theatre tho. honestly i can’t think of the last time i’ve actually been inside a movie theatre. i think it was probably the remake of the hills have eyes 1.
