We haven’t had a real vacation since we started Brownstoner over four years ago and after the last five months of writing the site almost entirely by ourselves while juggling Flea-related responsibilities, we are beat. So tomorrow we’re heading out with Mrs. B and a few friends (sans kids) to the Amalfi Coast for a week. We may write a few posts on the local architecture while we’re there, but by and large we’ll be leaving the blog in the extremely capable hands of Gabby Warshawer who, many of you will remember, played an integral editorial role in the site in 2007 and 2008. We look forward to returning full of blogging vim and Flea vigor. Ciao!

  1. “Loan sharks”

Damn, I should have known that was coming. Can’t “jump” those kind of sharks.

I’ve only been to Venezia, Fiorenze and Roma. I’ll have to see what this Amalfi coast is all about (is that where the spectacular, crazy-driven coastal highway is?) and then head down to Pompei, Naples and Sicily. I dig the boot.

    ***Bid half off peak comps***

  2. Make sure you eat at Zaccaria, just outside Amalfi. No menu. The food just keeps coming. The most amazing clams you will ever have.

If you are up for the drive, go to Sorrento and the restauarnt Il Buco. One of the best anywhere.

  3. Rent a little boat in Atrani and explore the little caves all over the coast. I second trying to get a look at Gore Vidal’s house in Ravello. I got a tour of it when I was there once and it’s pretty spectacular. It’s called La Rondinaia. Ask a local to show you where it is. While in Ravello you must eat dinner at Cumpa Cusimo! Ciao Ciao!

  4. Excellent choice! As BrooklynGreene warns – watch out for the non-residential bathrooms. The gas station ones are sometimes a hole in the floor that you place your feet either side of. Seems incongurous with the excellence of the wine, food and opera.

Keep your eye open for rustic objects & stuff which might be everyday there but unusual here.

BTW, I’m all for use of the royal “we”.

    Bon voyage
