Streetlevel: Checkers Signage Goes Up
As two tipsters have already emailed us to say, the Checkers restaurant currently under construction at 111 Court Street just got its signage up this morning. In addition, one notes, “the inside is starting to look like a restaurant (large kitchen equipment, a service counter, a counter along one side for people to eat at).”…

I didn’t know Todd’s name but he’s been very helpful for me in the past; I went in once looking for a bottle of sherry to use in a recipe and he steered me towards one that was tasty and very affordable. Lots of other places would try to upsell you instead.
Zap’s pretty good, it’s true. The selection could be better, but it’s not bad, considering the size of the place. And Todd knows his wine and spirits. In fact, he’s the only guy working there who knows what he’s talking about. Fortunately, he’s always there.
As for Checkers: Eesh.
2 things.
1 – As stated above, that liquor store is actually really good. Great bourbon and scotch selection and very knowledgeable staff.
2 – The Blarney Stone in midtown is an awesome bar.
In Jersey City, Fatburger was the closest restaurant to our house. I will never have the same cavalier joy about high-end fast food again. Is this another chain or something?
Zap liquors is the best. way better than S+V especially their $10 and under selection…..not to mention zero pretension nor a hipster in sight. their clientele is primarily sad-faced, ringless, middle aged women. LOL thank god i have a precious few more years before we can put me in that category…..
Rob,
Then you certainly don’t want to go into the Blarney Stone on Third Ave, between 44th and 45th during lunch on a weekday to see what they — and your friendly National Grid workers — are having for lunch.
you know ragin cagin that ALWAYS scares me. in soho which is a constant construction zone i always see guys drinking beers from paper bags in all the delis and stuff. while they are on the job. no wonder there are so many construction accidents. i mean who knows maybe they need a shot in the middle of the day to calm their nerves or something and it actually makes their job safer? but it’s still mind boggling to me.

True on the liquor store. You wouldn’t know it from looking at the joint, but they’ve beefed up their bourbon selection and they carry organic wines and all (if you’re into that sort of thing). Guy named Todd — mustache, “Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism Since 1492” t-shirt, and an Iron Maiden belt buckle — dropped some wine knowledge on me when I was in there on Saturday.
And on weekday mornings, you can watch construction crew workers pick up their morning pick-me ups in convenient airline-sized bottles.
Incidentally, that liquor store next door is excellent.
