The farmer’s market launching this month at Jackie Robinson Park in Bed Stuy (which we wrote about here) launched last weekend and blogger Ultraclay was on the scene as a volunteer. Here’s his report:

My initial fears of just about anything done in the neighborhood is that it’ll be half-assed. I’ve seen it over and over, people have big ideas but nothing to back it up. But my worries were unfounded. While a little disorganized, the market brought a great turnout of volunteers and what I hope is just the beginning of neighborhood denizens taking advantage of the only farm fresh fruits and vegetables on offer for miles.

For more details about the offerings and special activities, check out the post.

  1. Another farmers market started in Bed Stuy last Saturday at Hattie Carthan park on Marcy and Clifton Place. It will be operating from 9-3 every Saturday through October.

  3. Thanks for picking this up. All the support you can give to make this successful is appreciated.

Regarding my hyperbole, I was thinking of farmers markets specifically. Outside of the weeksville market, which I just found out about, there isn’t another one nearby unroll you get to grand army plaza or fort greene.

Really though, I live right over here and there isn’t a place with an acceptable selection of fruits and veg for half a mile. The fine fare on Marcus Garvey or the key food on mxb and gates are the closest. Everything else is terrible. Like mold on the garlic terrible.

  4. Well, anyway, these are my neighbors so I’m not going to make any snarky comments as if they were a bunch of hipsters in front of a ROTD thread!!!!

From the looks of it, it’s much bigger than I assumed. I know from PA that there is no Jersey corn yet. That’s probably from the Carolinas but still going to be quite good.

that’s quite a bit of hyperbole there :-/
