flatbush-rezone-073009.jpgWe don’t have much to go on other than a couple of tweets that came across the transom last night (see, non-believers, Twitter can be useful!), but apparently, the City Council approved two three rezonings (in addition to the Coney Island vote) yesterday, the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Contextual Rezoning and the Flatbush Rezoning. Way to go! Update: And Dumbo too!

  1. The Flatbush rezoning was requested by the many neighborhood associations concerned about the teardowns of Victorian Homes on blocks that were zoned R6. At least 4 were torn down during the condo building boom and sit as emply lots.

    Alvin Berk and Doris Ortiz of Community Board 14 and David Parish and Winston VonEngel of City Planning deserve credit for assisting the community residents in securing appropriate zoning for Victorian Flatbush. The largest concentration of Victorian homes in the US is here to stay!

  2. Ah, we are turning into france (lowrise middle – highrise exurbs). I imagine the only place people will be able to build tall buildings soon will be 4th avenue and, like, east new york and brownsville.

  3. This is good news. However, downzoning doesn’t mean a thing when community boards routinely upzone previously downzoned areas to accommodate influential developers, e.g., see Lefferts Place controversy highlighted this week on Brownstoner. Shame on John Dew and CB2. So much for protecting our low-scale, low-density communities.

  4. The city missed the chance to reduce the zoning for the Greenpoint waterfront back down to a human scale. While Williamsburg has the hi-rises it would be better to keep the Greenpoint waterfront low-level like the rest of Greenpoint. They’ve done some decent low-level waterfront housing in Edgewater, it’d work over in Greenpoint too. instead its unimaginative rubberstamping.
