We received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.
Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.
Somalia is in a state of ethnic Civil War. It is akin to Ratner vs. DDDB
Mall Security? Do they have jurisdiction on Fulton and South Elliot?????????
I get it when in doubt just go with – “Its Ratner’s fault”
btw, speaking of Somalia, lol, do you know the US in Iraq allows every family to own one fully automatic AK47 for self defense?
And also speaking of Somalia, maybe we have some cultural differences? Do you know that it Switzerland every family is required by law to own one fully automatic assault rifle? Not much crime in Switzerland, i hear.
snappy, definitely two years for carrying. But that’s ONLY for carrying. There are other add-ons for using a gun in a felony, etc. Of course that doesn’t bother 15yos.
It would be better to increase the penalty for TRAFFICKING. If you can cut down the flow of guns you can drive up the price and make them less affordable for kids. And of course decrease the supply.
“Washington D.C.’s gun law was very new, a first attempt. Wash. D.C. didn’t even have home rule until recently.”
rf, don’t try and wiggle around the facts. The facts are that BANNING all handguns in Washington had no effect on the crime rate. Period.
Not only that, you’re being extremely disingenuous bordering on dishonest to call the Washington DC gun law ‘very new’. The Firearms Control Regulation Act was passed in 1975 which banned the possession of all handguns not previously registered.
BTW the OP did not say cities. You did.
In Vermont there is no law at all concerning carrying handguns. Any citizen who is not o/w banned from owning a gun (i.e., convicted felon) is allowed to carry a concealed handgun. Compare the murder rate there to NY.
Generally speaking, eliminating private gun ownership has had the result of crime rates raising. It has especially in England. google the work of criminologist Gark Kleck.
If the store-owners and responsible adults were allowed to carry guns punk kids would think twice before pulling a gun out in a crowd. Notice how in places gun laws are the strictest there are the most shootings, it’s always easier to shoot unarmed people.

Yes, more guns! That works magnificently in Somalia!
It is definitely more than 2 yrs for illegal gun possession. I sat on a jury two years ago and, among other things, we convicted the guy for illegal gun possession and that alone got him I think 5-10. That could also be because of the other things we convicted him of (attempted murder of a civilian and attempted murder of a cop)
dave — you aren’t making sense. Do you really want to hand out life sentences to 16 year olds for carrying hand guns?
The laws are plenty tough, but the people breaking the laws either think they will not get caught or they just simply don’t care. You can do something about the former if enforcement picks up, but there isn’t much you can do about the latter through the legal system (except for the aforementioned life sentence, I guess).
I was a jury once for a very depressing case when I lived in Manhattan. A 21 year old and 2 minors robbed a delivery guy. They got his cell phone and about $50.
The 21 year old had a prior conviction and he was accused of using a gun during the robbery.
We found him guilty. I don’t know what the sentence was, but I’m sure he got multiple years — for $50 and a cell phone — because he used a gun.
If the laws were 10x as strict, I don’t think it would have mattered to him.
Actually rob, I think some kind of community work program could work. It’d have to be tied to years of probation though and strict curfews.
