Closing: DUB Pies and Silent H
DUB Pies is closing its original location on Columbia Street, but keeping its production space in Red Hook and its storefront in Windsor Terrace open. According to DUB’s website, “We tried to hold on for the turn of the economy, the oft promised improvements in local infrastructure etc etc – but it simply makes more sense to find a busier storefront to re-locate to which is what we plan to do.” Stop by all day today or until 3pm tomorrow for goodbyes and cheap savory pies: “We’re offering hot pies at $4 each and frozen pies to take home for the holidays at $3.50 each!! (Our lowest price point ever!)” In other news, Eater reports that the highly regarded Silent H, “a solid Vietnamese restaurant and a nice option near the Bedford area in Williamsburg, is closing this month.”

Openings: Cafe 474 and Roebling Inn
Cafe 474 (474 Fourth Avenue, between 10th and 11th Street) opened last week, serving ” Blue Sky Bakery‘s wonderful, fruit-heavy muffins, croissants from Balthazar bakery, and other baked goods from Little Buddy,” Fork in the Road reports…Plus, “Roebling Inn, the eagerly anticipated new bar from the folks behind Boerum Hill’s The Brooklyn Inn, will open next Monday, December 28,” says Brooklyn Heights Blog, which also shares some interior photos of the old Magnetic Field space.

Williamsburg’s Locavore Liquor
Grub Street already reported on New York Distilling Company and Breuckelen Distilling, and now they’ve got the skinny on Kings County Distillery, which is “planning to start making and selling double-distilled whiskey, bourbon, and (oh yes!) moonshine, right in East Williamsburg.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Lost City had paid a visit to Trini-Gul, and now Sam Sifton for the NY Times weighs in: “The bake and shark in particular is terrific ($5), both bright and earthy, like a humid, sunny day at Maracas Bay outside of Port of Spain. And there are wonderful doubles ($1.50), the classic Trinidadian street food of curried chickpeas over turmeric-hued fry bread, liberally doused with hot sauce: breakfast in three bites.”

Roberta’s: Best Cheap Eats in America?
Bon Appetit‘s Foodist blog just ran their top 10 list for the Best Restaurant Dishes of 2009 — that cost less than $10. And Brooklyn’s own Roberta’s came out on top with their “Tristar strawberry salad with mozzarella, balsamic, mint, and gray salt; $9.” Unfortunately, we were just at Roberta’s the other day, and this out-of-season dish wasn’t on the menu, but their bibb lettuce salad (with dried cherry vinaigrette, gorgonzola and roasted walnuts) made the perfect complement to our pizza.

Locavore Vino
“Red Hook Winery is selling its first vintage,” says the Brooklyn Paper. The wine is made on Van Dyke Street in Red Hook, and the grapes are grown on Long Island.   1. DUB closing their storefront makes me sad. But if it’s just to relocate to a storefront with better foot traffic, then it’s tough to blame them. Guess I’ll have to see whether I can make it out there for food tonight.

  2. I have a feeling that Church Avenue, at least our stretch, is more Golden Krust than Dub territory. Which is to say, at least we’ve got meat pies and darn tasty ones. We do, however, need everything else conceivable on Church Avenue, except Crap from China; thanks to Bobby’s, we’ve got a surplus of that.

    they dont need large storefronts so id like to see them expand…

  4. i was in silent h a few weeks ago, and the super-nice owner said that he would likely be involved in opening a different place in the same spot. can’t remember what the cuisine was, but definitely not banh-mi. good luck, we always enjoyed the food!
