This two-family limestone house at 594 2nd Street in Park Slope just hit the market this week with a price tag of $3,500,000. It’s a great house to be sure, with lots of original detail combined with a complete modernization of bathrooms, kitchen, etc. It will be an interesting test of the high-end market in the Slope.

  1. “Speaking of design snobbery, has anyone else seen the fab new book RESTORING A HOUSE IN THE CITY (Artisan)? A friend gave me a copy. Lots of the interiors are Brooklyn brownstones. Primo house porn!”

YES, Grand Army, I stayed up late one night reading it. I LOVE the BBW house — the one that Pilar Guzman and her in-laws share.

It has a modern reclaimed wood island with old stuff like subway tile and the original closets and arch thingy in the kitchen. (Heather, it’s the only island I’ve ever seen that I like.) Also a modern kitchen running the length of the house on the first floor. And great fabric from the company where one of the owners works that cost $400 a yard. The place looks amazing. I’m sure the renovation cost a billion dollars.

  2. Agree, dated. Too much wood. I mean, in the kitchen and with the furniture — I’m not saying they should tear out the wainscotting.

Doesn’t matter though, the rich buyers will drop another $100 million to make it look like the latest Pottery Barn catalog.

I like soapstone counters too but I’m also crazy about wood counters. But we don’t have any counters. Or any gas — gas leak. We’re thinking about going back to a wood stove — better crust on the bread, you know.

  3. I think there were lot line issues with side windows for that kitchen extension.

I’m sure none of those things you mentioned were actually “cheap.” Not to your liking but probably not cheap, which is always the problem with paying for high end kitchen jobs.

  4. Maybe we haven’t seen the entire space but knowing RE brokers they usually only show the stuff that’s presentable no?
Don’t ya wish the ensuite bathroom was shown as well? That’s a key omission.

Okay maybe it’s personal but for that sort of money that kitchen seems routine to us…cabinets are dated, tile floor is cheap, tiny silly windows, ugly backsplash, and the design is tight. What a missed opportunity to have a nice big window over that sink!…see you are right we don’t like that kitchen:)

  5. You may not like the kitchen but I don’t think it’s mediocre. We’ve probably only seen ics of less than 1/3 the space.
