Frustration is building on the Brooklynian message boards over delays at BKLYN GOLD, the new rental complex on Gold Street between Tillary and Concord Street in Downtown Brooklyn. Evidently, problems relating to the Certificate of Occupancy are pushing back move-in dates and causing serious problems for the first batch of lease signers, some of whom are going to be left out in the cold for a while. Here’s one person’s experience thus far:

My boyfriend and I were supposed to move in December 19 and we were told they didn’t have the CofO and that the move in date would DEFINITELY be Jan2. The holidays were ruined, we had already taken off work thinking we were going to be moving and instead spent the time moving into storage connected to the building. Then it was postponed AGAIN and AGAIN. I asked if they were just picking dates out of the future and finally got the answer I wanted to hear -THEY DON’T KNOW when they’ll have the CofO!

Bummer.

  1. 11217,

Renting in NYC is definitely cheaper than owning in vast majority of cases …. not sure how you could make that statement.

  2. I went with a friend to look at Brooklyn Gold the day he was to sign his lease at Brooklyn Gold, they didn’t realize they were so rude that he didn’t sign and moved to Avalon.

Also, they lie about their deposits…they aren’t as advertised. They cost too much for those tiny apartments on the BQE and they are supposed to have a pool that opens in April…now how are they have a pool in April if they don’t even have a C of O?!

  3. “That is, if you value stability and don’t feel comfortable with possible homelessness if you can’t find a new apartment.”

You just described exactly why people in this city get sick of renting and end up buying a place. It’s why I did it.

    And it’s cheaper than rent.

  4. I have friends moving in there who’s move in date was Jan 2nd too and its been ‘pushed’ to February 1st… they did mention that they were ‘compensating’ somehow although they didn’t give specifics. Sucks to hear the building still doesn’t know when the CofO will be granted… I wonder if they will let people out of there leases?

  5. Rob — that’s exactly why apartment hunting (at least in my price range) totally sucks in this city. Listings don’t exist until, for the most part, until MAX 3 weeks before the move-in date. So, you will have already had to make a decision about the place you’re living in. Sign a new lease or, at least, pay another rent. You end up having to pay rent for two apartments.

That is, if you value stability and don’t feel comfortable with possible homelessness if you can’t find a new apartment. I fall into that camp.

🙁 the psychic part of brain says they will be broken up before this place is allowed occupancy. hopefully these people get some sort of rent reduction or something.. sucky situation it is when you dont know when you have to move out of where you currently are.

  7. C of O’s in NY are always delayed, whether it be a 300 unit building or a single house renovation.

At least make sure you get your money back if the apartment is not delivered by a certain date.

  8. I wouldn’t sign a lease on a place that didn’t have a C of O – and thanks to Frownstoners I’m smart enough to ask that now before signing a lease.
