Looks like somebody’s got yet another plan for the space on the corner of Smith and Pacific. The short-lived Bueno, along with the old outdoor Trout space behind it, was boarded up again a couple of weeks ago. In recent history, this restaurant space has been home to Since 1963, Trout, and Gravy. The corner gets plenty of foot traffic and next door neighbor Pacifico has managed to stay open for a while now, but nothing seems to be working out here. Anyone know what’s going on in there?

  1. As far as I know the new person is completely different from the Pacifico ownership group. Word is that the back trout spce will reopen as something or other, but the corner space will not be a restaurant. Stay tuned…

  2. Let’s take a minute here…first was Gravy which we can all agree was terrible, then came Trout which was fun, the food was well priced and more than serviceable. I was sad to see it go. Then came “Since 1964”, or should I say “the worst BBQ restaurant I’ve seen in years plus a large space with construction being done on it all the time”. Seriously – Since 1964 was AWFUL. Then came some weird mix of cuisines / upscale mall food court / Bueno. Now it’s all shuttered. It;s as if the owners can’t make up their mind and think that we don’t care if they take their sweet time playing around with the space. I for one don’t care what cuisine goes there, so long as it’s not a concept from the previous owners.

  3. more schlock from Mamary and company I’m sure.

Only if you are moving to Jersey. Jim is done with Brooklyn. Which should mean HUGE opportunity for resy entrepreneurs who want to plant their flag on Smith St. We only ask you bring your mediocrity. Excellence is frowned upon. Well, not really…but after nearly 15 years of thinking average = good (Mamariocrity, if you will) has conditioned the locals. If you’re going to do something really great, go slow or we’ll be too confused to go along with it.

  4. Bueno was great–the first nice place to open in that location in years. Gravy was absolutely disgusting (the food was literally slop on a plate) and its follow-ups were very mediocre. But Bueno was really nice–good food, reasonable prices, very friendly service. We were so disappointed it didn’t last. 🙁
