Mexican Spot Coming to Columbia Street
Eater spoke with Marla Cornejo, owner of 5 Burro Cafe in Forest Hills, and confirmed that this Queens Mexican joint is taking over the old Pit Stop space on Columbia Street: “Construction will begin in early March, and in April she hopes to open a location that closely resembles the Queens original, right down to the palapa bar… The Cornejos will continue to host petanque in the back patio.” Photo by Patrick Siggins for Eater.

Nothing But Love for Lot 2
687 6th Avenue, Greenwood Heights; (718) 499-5623
We’ve gotten a couple of emails from fans of Lot 2 recommending it for a restaurant of the day. So, in case you missed it, we’ve already covered it! We’ve been meaning to stop by for a meal, so please post a review in the restaurant guide and let us know what you consider the best things on the menu. Branching Out to Manhattan
Gothamist notes that Grimaldi’s is getting ready to open a 24-hour pizza joint in the old Limelight space: “Sometime in mid-April, the newly renovated Limelight Marketplace is expected to open, replacing the famous nightclub with over 60 boutique retailers in the 163-year-old deconsecrated Chelsea church. Grimaldi’s Pizza will fill an approximately 1,200 square foot location off the 6th Avenue entrance, and also sell pies out of a round-the-clock to-go window.” Plus, Eater reports that the owners of Zenkichi, one of our favorite Williamsburg restaurants, “just signed a lease at 150 Bowery, right by Broome.”

After the jump: Best all-you-can-eat deals in Brooklyn, local highlights from the Times Dining section, and Mezcal’s closes…

Best All-You-Can-Eat
Time Out New York rounds up the best deals in the city for aspiring competitive eaters, and their list includes 2 Brooklyn spots — Chez Oskar, which offers all-you-can-eat mussels with fries on Tuesday nights for $12, and Sheepshead Bay’s Clemente’s Maryland Crab House, where they’ve got unlimited crabs every day for $29.95, cash only.

Brooklyn Dining Highlights
In this week’s New York Times Dining section, you’ll find a slideshow of a seminar on raising and cooking rabbits, which took place at Roberta’s; a close look at Blue Bottle Coffee, which is scheduled to open in Williamsburg on March 10; a short review of Bread and Butter in Brooklyn Heights; a little piece about Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream’s shop in Greenpoint; a blurb about Mimi’s Hummus’s sidekick, Market, in Ditmas Park; and a cute picture of the ladies of Pies ‘n’ Thighs.

Now Closed: Mezcal’s
Lost City laments: “Mezcals, the longstanding Mexican restaurant between Henry and Clinton, is suddenly gone. A neighbor told me, ‘Their lease ran out and the rent skyrocketed.’ Pretty dumb business move on the landlord’s part, given there are already plenty of empty storefronts on the street.”

  1. I used to live right by the original Blue Bottle Coffee “stand” in Hayes Valley, San Francisco and it is pretty freaking good. Problem is, they use a manual drip technique (not sure if that is the correct term) that takes a little while. But if you have time, it is worth it . ..

  2. 24 hour Grimaldi’s in the city. How cool is that? But they should do mini’s like Amorina.

  3. Mezcal’s on Atlantic was a nice place – OK food but GREAT, friendly service and they didn’t skimp on the alcohol in the margaritas.

  4. I really liked the Pit Stop…. went there a couple times for brunch and played petanque. Yummy and fun. Unfortunatley, it was always basically empty, so I guess I’m not surprised.

  5. Wow, that is crazy about Grimaldi’s. Good! I am always looking for a decent place to eat dinner in that area. There isn’t much.

  6. Yes Sir!!! Will report on it if I end up going.

P.S. looks like they have a Russian chef and the dishes reflect that spin as well.
