The double-wide brownstone walk-up at 940-942 Fulton Street has long been a blight on this block between St. James Place and Cambridge Place. The rundown building was finally sold last year for $855,000. At the end of last week, a scaffolding went up, as per this DOB permit. There’s no other information online about the plans for the building and we weren’t able to reach the developer (who appears to be a contractor) by phone. But even a crappy renovation of this place could have big ramifications for a stretch of Fulton Street that can use all the help it can get, especially since this place has two empty storefronts right now. Activate, activate! GMAP DOB

  1. The last thing needed at that triangle is a bar. Now I know where it is going to be. I saw them working in the space on Grand on the left hand side if you are heading towards Atlantic. That corner is already a hangout spot although lately the cops have had more of a presence sitting parked the wrong way at the corner. That will be interesting when it is open. What is needed as far as a restaurant is a good latin restaurant with good rice and beans, chicken, roast pork and plantains and soups.

  2. Check out essential cakes, more4. Yeah, they only have cupcakes, but they’re good. I think they’re $2? Or even less. They’re less fancy than Michael Allen, where they wrap the cupcakes in paper and make them look like sculpture.

  3. Heather, when I say non-foo foo fancy bakery, I’m thinking of those old neighborhood ones where one with $2 has a ton of choices and item would be big enough to fight of empty stomach – ie $2.50 for a tiny cupcake – NO THANKS

  4. 1842- I would completely only be doing it for the baked goods! What else are guys good for? Oh wait- barbeque! 😉

I met a guy 2 years ago – he was helping fix a friends big commercial website so we shared geekspeak. I know he said he was going to open a bakery so I’m wondering if he is the same person.

  5. 1842–totally agreed that the triangle could be a great public space. A friendly neighborhood watering hole there, combined with the already existing Kush/Outpost/Michael Allen traffic could make for a dynamic welcoming space. Imagine benches and tables in the actual triangle too. Could be really nice.

bxgrl–sounds like you are describing Michael Allen. He is an exceedingly friendly man and what he makes in the bakery is really good.

  6. We could create a laundry list of basic stores and restaurants that would do well on that stretch, from no-frills to more upmarket. I agree that a bit more density is key. I actually think that the Putnam Fulton triangle could be a great place if more businesses moved in. That’s why I’m interested in the Grand Ave. Bar & Grill place… Could be a real atmosphere change for that intersection.
