A couple of weekends ago we played in the first annual Williamsburg Open in McCarren Park to raise money for the first phase of the court renovations. This past weekend, a die-hard group of volunteers from the non-profit McCarren Tennis tackled the renovation of Court 7 themselves. Impressive! Let’s hope that some of the developers of new buildings near by step up with some donations to finish the rest of the courts! For more photos of the renovation, check out this Flickr set.

  1. While I think it’s pretty awesome they decided to do this and the renovation looks great, it reflects so poorly on the parks department who should have paid for this. I love McCarren for lots of reasons, but parts of it are in really bad shape– it’s in desperate need of more garbage cans/bathrooms/water fountains, which are really just the basics. I question why so much taxpayer money and effort has been put into fixing up the Pool (and promoting waterfront concerts, both of which I think are good things but not priorities) when the essentials of this park aren’t even properly maintained. It’s kind of shameful.

That would be great, but I’d settle for them chipping in to buy some more garbage cans for the park. Whenever I’m in McCarren the few garbage cans that do exist are always overflowing.
