A motorcyclist was killed this morning at around 7 a.m. when he (we assume) was struck by a taxi heading east on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond Streets. As of 9:30 this morning, Atlantic Avenue was shut down in both directions between Smith Street and Flatbush Avenue, causing a series of reverberating traffic jams on all the major thoroughfares in the area.

  1. apprapo of nothing even expert motorcycle drivers are at risk

and I am told the reason why the entire Atlantic Avenue was closed was because the accident started on one side and ended on the other and all lanes were involved. Its also my understanding that all fatal accidents are investigated by Police department experts from the Highway Patrol Division who are specially trained and experienced to do so and they had to await their arrival before the street could be reopened.

Of course sympathy to the family of the deceased.

  2. you do not need a Class M for 2 wheel vehicles 49cc and under. Some vespa’s (the ubiquitous ones in bklyn) and a lot of the chinese knock offs – are 49cc, specifically for this reason. That aside, people need not take a safety course before testing for Class M…which IMO is a real problem. What bothers me most is seeing elementary aged children being put on the backs of these chintzy scooters – and usually being dumped off at St. Ann’s………
