After the saga at 580 Carroll Street development was resolved, and units started selling in late April, we wanted to see what people in the neighborhood thought about the building. To refresh, it is an Enrique Norten design, built on the stretch of Carroll between 4th and 5th Avenue. The developers wanted to build three extra townhouses on the front lawn of the five story building, but were denied by the Board of Standards and Appeals. Passers-by were just asked their general opinion of its place in the neighborhood.
Beth, a resident of Carroll Gardens, said, “I think it’s great. I’m not upset about modern additions to the neighborhood at all.” She thought that as long as a building was responsive to the neighborhood, and it “wasn’t an imitation of some brownstone,” she approved.
Matt (not pictured), in Accounts Payable and a Park Slope resident, considered the building intensely before reaching his decision: “Um, no.” When asked to clarify, he said “This would fit somewhere else better, probably Manhattan. On such a small street, with the brownstones, it doesn’t quite fit.”
Sirin, a TV Producer, said: “It’s better than what I see in Williamsburg.” It reminded her of a building in Europe or Miami, but she says, “Because the buildings in my neighborhood are very, very ugly, this is okay. It doesn’t go well with this neighborhood, but I guess they tried.”
Anne and Richard, self-professed “Park Slope old timers” were also hesitant. “I don’t know,” said Richard, “Is it strong? It doesn’t look as strong as brick.” Anne didn’t like it but said, “Progress goes on.” They both worried about parking problems the building may cause.
A fairly lukewarm reception from Park Slope passers-by. Brownstoners, any final aesthetic opinion on 580 Carroll?
I love all the opinions that people feel free expressing on new developments. My real question is how qualified are they and how many examples of their work can they compare
when push comes to shove. I think any new construction should be viewed as a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. these guys as well as others spend alot of money on the —–PROPERTIES THEY OWNE—– , these peoples posts are usless noise.
I just wanted to add one response to BABS.. people who wish they lived in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, especially across the street from you at such close range.
NO OFFENSE INTENDED TO THE DEVELOPERS.

YOU ARE RIGHT I AM SICK. BUT THATS MY PROBLEM NOT YOURS. YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT EVERY POST TO BROWNSTONER VERIFIES THE FACT THAT THIS BUILDING IS SHIT UGLY, POORLY BUILT AND COMPROMISED IN DESIGN. IT IS MY OPINION AND ONLY MY OPINION THAT THESE PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING. IT IS YOUR PROBLEM THAT YOU TAKE IT SO PERSONALLY, IT PROBABLY MEANS DEEP DOWN BEYOND THE SNOB, AWARD WINNING, ELITIST ATTITUDE THAT THESE PEOPLE REGURGITATE WHEN THEY OPEN THERE MOUTHS, THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THEY FUCKED THIS PROJECT UP.
YES I AM SICK,, HOWEVER I AM NOT STUPID.
Too Cool,
I looked at your other postings…wow…you seem like a pretty bitter neighbor. Each one of your other postings are just negative talk. I can not imagine a normal person would be so angry with this lovely building. Particular looking at how much attention to detail was made.
Too Cool you sound sick!!!!!

THIS IS THE UGLIEST AQUARIUM I HAVE EVER SEEN. ENRIQUE MUST HAVE CHARGED THEM SO MUCH MONEY FOR THE DESIGN THAT THEY NEEDED TO CHEAP OUT ON THE CONSTRUCTION. SIMPLE LINE DESIGN HAS ITS PLACE HOWEVER A HOME NEEDS SOME
WALLS. THE DEVELOPERS WERE NOT PASSIONATE ABOUT CONSTRUCTION. IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN RUSHED AND DONE ON THE CHEAP. I THINK THEY LIKED THE DESIGN BECAUSE
IT WAS SOLD TO THEM AS A CHEAP BUILD. NOT ONE MOLDING, STAIRS LEFT RAW, CARPETS THAT ARE CHEAP, WINDOWS WALLS DONE ON THE CHEAP, LEAKING ROOFING,
BUCKLING FLOORS, DYING TREES, THIS BUILDING IS SO BLAND IT REMINDS ME OF A MENTAL FACILITY. TOO STERILE, NO CHARACTER, I THINK THEY ARE THE WORST DEVELOPERS THAT COULD HAVE TRIED TO MAKE A STATEMENT WITH DESIGN. THEY NEEDED TO RETHINK THIS FROM THE START. DID I MENTION THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE PARKING I HAVE EVER SEEN. THIS IS GARBAGE. GOOD ATTEMPT WITH DESIGN, HOWEVER ENRIQUE NORTEN COMPROMISED QUALITY BECAUSE THESE DEVELOPERS WANTED GREAT FORM FOR LITTLE MONEY. PEOPLE ARE NOT THAT STUPID . AS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LIKE THE BUILDING, I DONT THINK THEY UNDERSTAND HOW POORLY THIS PROJECT WAS EXECUTED. BUYER BEWARE
I wasn’t crazy about the 2 bedroom layouts, the kitchen IS really in the Living Room, not even in a corner, but just straight alongside the wall. I also do not like open shelving for my dishes and stuff, makes the place look messy. For the prices they are charging I would have of liked to pick out my own cabinetry. Not everyone’s home is “Jetson” modern.
I like it a lot. I liked it before I saw it in person though – after that I liked it more
do html tags work?
decent – but definitely needed the touch of that 11th architect.
No one came up with a great profession a la “The Onion” man-on-the-street deal.
If someone asks me I’m gonna say Chicken-Sexer.
