This has got to be every restaurant owner’s nightmare: You open up one week, and the next the bulldozers come in and start demolishing the building next door. Such is the case for poor Broken English, the new Italian spot that just debuted at 68 Bergen Street. A tipster sent in this photo of a full-on tear-down going on at 64 Bergen Street right next door. Must make for some dusty al fresco dining! A look at the DOB docs shows that this technically isn’t a tear-down; instead it’s one of those “alterations” where they leave one brick in place. The plan is for a four-story building where the one-story one used to stand. Expect three floors of residential over a commercial ground floor. GMAP P*Shark DOB
glad to see people still want to build (and I assume someone lending for the building).
It’s for the best. Only a year ago that block was one hideous eyesore after the other. There are still a few such buildings between Court and Smith–which is really surprising considering how expensive real estate is there.
