“Sexy people, ritzy lighting and comfy lounge furniture” is not a line we would use to describe many spots in Brooklyn, much less Gowanus. But the New York Post was apparently pretty impressed with the dance club that just had its soft opening at 424 Third Avenue. The club, called “Ultraviolet,” was a warehouse space and is now a three-story, very purple, dance-and-drink destination. As a Greenpoint visitor noted, Gowanus definitely doesn’t stink so much anymore.

  1. Live right down the Ave from this (8th st) and every time I walk by the shadyiest of the shady looking people are going inside. Seems to be a very relaxed dress code (shorts, tanks, and tennis shoes anyone?) so maybe this will be great for the locals! A fancy night club I can wear flip flops in.

My husband and I are actually thinking of opening up a restaurant here 🙂

    Very interesting.

That’s the kind of thing that we should hope for in Gowanus… Sandwich shop/Breakfast diner… things that improve the quality of life for the local community.

  3. ummmm where the hell are u ppl getting 11217, whether it’s Gowanus or not, this location shares “Park Slopes” zip code of 11215, sorry yuppies, its 11215… And FYI, before the immigration of yuppies into the neighborhood, that location was a Sandwich shop / Breakfast diner called Angelo’s for over 30 years, get your facts straight…

  4. gah. while it really isnt my thing much these days, clubs are good for the city. c’mon, let it get a little bit of it’s edge back. and if there industrial areas that arent being utilized for, why not? i am in total agreeance with 11217 on this.

you need people to want to come to nyc who arent just bankers and wall street types, this is a good thing. so much night life was shut down in manhattan because of guiliani’s crusade against everything fun, perhaps it’s good brooklyn is going to pick up where manhattan left off.

and lmfao about the comment of a 12 am curfew and eating overpriced precooked meals from union market hahahahhaha.

  5. “btw, your nurse is a real hottie” – how did you know my other 1/2 is a nurse? 🙂

A night club or 2 in area is fine, 11217. Yes, generally good place because of noise factor. But when becomes nightclub central — other issues develop. Like rowdiness, violence, and driving other businesses out because they can’t afford rents that alcohol businesses can. And lot of people that can’t afford your clubs and need to get up early for their jobs work in these industrial areas — so would be detriment to our economy if these businesses relocated. The hotels in area are also helping drive them out—but hotels are not allowed to build in residential because they are ‘transient’.
