The $6 million reconstruction of Myrtle Avenue between Hall and Emerson, including the 2-block-long pedestrian plaza, is now in the design stage. There will be a public workshop next Wedensday, October 13th, from 5:30-7:30pm, at Benjamin Banneker Academy (77 Clinton Avenue between Myrtle & Park Avenues) in the cafeteria. Everyone’s welcome to share ideas on what type of programming, landscaping, and amenities should come to the future plaza. RSVP here.

  1. Why does this stretch need a park/plaza? Because it’s fugly, that’s why. If you ever wondered why the street is so wide here, it’s because there was an elevated subway stop here until the myrtle avenue el was torn down (I think in the early 40s).

  2. There are lots of hard-working folks living around here, striving to keep up their blue-collar homes. It’s been a somewhat neglected area and it’s time to make it nice for us and invite folks to stop by and experience it.

  3. wellheythere, you make a good point. This stretch is rather ugly and there is no harm in trying to turn this into something more attractive.

  4. The street was widened here at some point to make a sort of access road to Myrtle, which is totally unneeded. A pedestrian plaza would be a welcome replacement.
