Saul Bolton, of Saul on Smith Street and the Vanderbilt in Prospect Heights, has signed a lease for the old Mezcal’s space on Atlantic Avenue between Clinton and Henry. By June, he is planning to open an Italian restaurant featuring the cuisine of Puglia. One of my partners is from that region and I have been playing around with some of the food, like homemade orecchietti, Bolton told the New York Times. I hope to travel there this winter. GMAP

  1. Would love to see Saul open an Italian spot with the same upscale casual vibe. There’s no higher brow Italian (noodle pudding is the pits) in the area…

  2. Quenn empty??? Wehen? They do a great lunch business and are pretty busy during the week until about 9; and get busy on weekends for dinner.

And what about Lunetta and Bino (Po) on Smith?

  3. i think a more upscale italian joint could do well around here. around here there are some pizza shops, the bizarre and always-empty queen italian restaurant, and further down on court some italian-american red sauce spots, but there’s nothing like a lupa, al-di-la, etc. nearby that i can think of.

there’s noodle pudding way up on henry but that’s kind of a trek if you live below atlantic.

i hope this place has some nice, well-seasoned pasta dishes with handmade pasta.

  4. thwackamole: Are you thinking of that pizza place on Atlantic? It closed down and was almost immediately scary-looking boarded up (like windows and door had been smashed).

I’ll be happy to try this new Saul place when it opens. I’m happy for that space to be filled–it left a pretty big gap in that block.

I’m as big a fan of gloppy Mexican as the next person–sometimes all I require is a good margarita, something cheesy, and some El Yucateco to sprinkle on it. But even by my lowbrow standard, Mezcal’s was pretty terrible. It was always funny how the less busy it was the worse the service was.

I noticed something called Colonie was opening soon, between Heights Chateau and Chip Shop. Looks like it will be a wine bar or something.

  5. I liked mezcals. Really aren’t that many Mexican restaurants around. One on Smith closed.
Lot of restaurants seemed very slow…I got take out from LuLuc last night…peeked into Chance no diners but people at bar, Athena the new greek place empty, and Verde (new italian next to LuLuc) had about 2 tables occupied even with ‘live music’).

  6. Tough market for Italian. There’s one on the block already, three on Montague, and one further north on Henry, and those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head in 30 seconds.

  7. it will be so nice to have Italian food…..seems like very few new restaurants that are new are Italian. Especially if it is non traditional Italian.
