Karl Fischer is in the process of expanding his already significant mark on the neighborhood of Williamsburg with this 7-story, 94-unit building rising at 568 Union Avenue. (The property was purchased back in 2008 for $20 million.) This place is rising across the street from another recent Karl creation at 525 Union. In atypical fashion, the construction process at 568 appears to be going remarkably smoothly, if this Curbed report from last month is to be believed. GMAP DOB

  1. It might be, DH.

If this is the east side of Union, it was rezoned for contextual (height-limited) zoning in 2008. The west side of the street was rezoned from manufacturing to residential (with height limits) in 2005; one of the follow up actions was the massive contextual zoning of most of Williamsburg & Greenpoint. So now both sides of Union have the same zoning.

I don’t remember seeing a tower proposal for this site, though.

  2. construction back then was rough as material costs went up 30% during boom, crews were hard to get, and subs were always late exact opposite now

  3. Wasn’t this part of the hood zoned for much taller bldgs when the lot was initially bought and then subsequently downzoned? I remember reading there was an outrageously tall bldg planned for that lot.

    WBer?

  4. If there was any one man responsible for ruining Williamsburg, thy name would be Hot Karl Fischer.

Is Hot Karl Beach on Bedford still a stalled mess? I believe it is. A pox on all his buildings.
