BREAKING: McCarren Getting a Tennis Bubble

It’s been a rough few weeks for tennis bubbles in Brooklyn, what with the collapse of the one in Prospect Park in December and in Cobble Hill this week, so it’s nice to hear some good tennis bubble news for a change: According to a memo dated January 26, 2011 and addressed to Marty Markowitz and Community Board 1 District Manager Gerry Esposito, the Parks Department plans to issue a RFP for “the development, operation and maintenance of an indoor tennis facility at McCarren Park.” The RFP, which will be for a 15-year period, comes on the heels of last year’s grass-roots-led makeover of the parks existing tennis courts by the nonprofit McCarren Tennis Association. Not surprisingly, the group is thrilled by the news. “A bubble in McCarren Park will make the tennis season year round while ensuring that the courts remain is great shape,” said Sean Hoess, President of McCarren Tennis Association. Pretty exciting!
