Brooklyn Industries is expanding in Brooklyn by opening its sixth store in the borough at 70 Front Street in Dumbo. Today Crain’s reported that the “hip clothier” signed a five-year lease at the old Mikey’s Hookup spot. It apparently will be Dumbo-centric, “featuring art installations that will cater to the artsy neighborhood.” The retailer is having a sample sale in its new spot later this week.

  1. Thanks for clearing that up Bk real estate veteran. The notion that the arts in Dumbo are dead is a total myth. Not only the 20 galleries you mention and the hundreds of studio artists, but there is St. Ann’s, and a bunch of dancers and dance companies have studios down there as well.

I’d say given the TINY size of the neighborhood, it might have more “arts” than any other neighborhood in the city when looking at the overall population.

But frownstoners like to talk out of their ass.

  2. BI just upgraded their office space from an old loft building to some of their best space in dumbo actually

of course stuff not made in USA, impossible to compete that way mass market BI made it through the worst due to great talent and leadership

Arts in dumbo – writers above very wrong. There are twenty galleries in dumbo (struggling but there) and still about 150 studio artists, many sharing space, a fraction of the 500 of 10 years ago but still there not all gone, a myth

come to March 3rd gallery walk, you’ll see

  3. a couple times I’ve bought stuff from BI and then I see too many people wearing the same thing. For some reason when I wear dockers I don’t get upset when I see someone else wearing dockers. Anyhoo, I wanted to like Mikey’s Hook-up but all three times I’d gone there I was given wrong information…so I had to scurry over to Tekserve (inconvenient) to get the true story.

@j macjohnson – best comment of the year!

Besides Smack Mellon and the few galleries left at 55 Washington what is artsy in DUMBO?

The West Elm store or the Starbucks?
