The Brooklyn Paper has some interesting quotes from Alec Shtromandel, the developer of the soon-to-open Union Hotel on Degraw between 3rd and 4th avenues, about how he thinks his finished product will fare. The developer compares his hotel to Le Bleu, the only other hotel in Gowanus that’s not a big chain property: “We have beautiful reclaimed artisanal brick and art deco finishes. We are smaller, but nevertheless there is a personal touch that Le Bleu seems to be lacking.” (Le Bleu’s GM retorts: “Our hotel stands above them [our competitors] because we have a nicer product and Manhattan views.”) Shtromandel also says that while he expects to make money off Atlantic Yards, “The rooms are not spacious enough for an NBA player.” Rates at the 43-room property are supposed to run between $129 and $200 a night.
