Earlier this week a spokeswoman for the MTA said that as far as she knew, the scheduled closure of the Smith-9th Street train station was still planned for late May. The station is set to be completely closed until spring of next year, according to the MTA’s website, as part of the $275.5 million Culver Viaduct rehabilitation project. Prepare yourselves, Carroll Gardens and Red Hook commuters! GMAP

  1. Aren’t people over there probably already taking the bus to the train? A 30 minute walk to the train sucks, but so does a 25 minute walk.

    I remember thinking this station closure was a huge outrage when they announced it way back when, but then the MTA really upped the ante with the 15th Street and Ft. Hamilton closures, which actually have added a 15-20 minute walk to a lot of people’s commutes, or having to take the train backwards, which would be just excruciatingly frustrating for me in the morning.

    That said, it is a slap in the face to Red Hook residents who are pretty screwed with transit as it is. Hopefully that station will be spiffed up enough to provide some solace when it reopens.

  2. According to Google Maps, the walk from Coffey St. and Conover St. to Smith/9th is 24 minutes, while the walk to Carrol is 29.

    In my mind either suck, but 5 minutes does qualify as “slightly longer.”

    The MTA has enough budget issues without having to spend more money for supplemental service when capital projects are being carried out.

  3. re: the “slightly longer walk”… if you live at Coffey St. and Conover St. (considered a fairly prime Red Hook block), and you want to walk to the F Train, it will now take you *29 MINUTES* to walk to the Carroll St. stop according to Google maps. it really is pretty ridiculous. wish they would just subsidize the IKEA ferry for commuters or something…

  4. Sure, that sucks, but there are stops relatively close by on the same line, and since there is no express vs local issue, a slightly longer walk is all you’re facing.
