Brooklyn’s so-called oldest Italian restaurant, Monte’s, is coming back to life with an updated menu and a whole new interior. The old Monte’s, on Carroll Street off 3rd Avenue, closed in 2008, but we noticed action at the space earlier this year. We were able to talk to the new owners, who tell us the restaurant will serve “New Italian” cuisine and offer wood oven pizza. The entire space, which is slated to open in four to six weeks, has been remodeled, and the kitchen features a shiny new pizza oven from Naples. The restaurant will also keep the original name. 1. Just read about this on Gothamist. It’s funny that it is always a mystery why old restaurants fall out of favor. When the food is bad, people vote with their feet. The owners, bad customers, bloggers, the ambiance, do not make a difference. If your food sucks people will go somewhere else, it is very simple.

  2. The old Monte’s was a ghastly dump lovable only for its kitsch appeal, with ripped red vinyl banquettes and hideous decorating. This is more utilitarian but that’s fine. And the bar has been restored so what’s the big deal?

  3. Makes no sense – if you are going to call the place Monte’s and harken back to its history, why remove all vestiges of that history????

If you intend to simply open a new restaurant, then come up with a name and ignore the history.

Too early to say but it doesnt seem as if these proprietors are too well thought out
