For the Fort Greener's out there...
Was anyone else aware of this? Is it old news? Isn't this smack-bang next to the Walt Whitman houses?

I know everyone will say I'm full of s*&t but I keep hearing from long time Ft. Greene neighbors that Walt Whitman is about half empty right now - and I'm talking people that should know not some newbies. I also heard from a guy who's run a take-out place opposite Whitman for 20-years that his business is declining precipitously as every week more of his customers come in and say "we're out of here."
Anyone know anything specific going on?

Walt Wittman is more than half empty because the city says they are renovating the units, cycling people out for renovations, then cycling back in when units are complete. I've heard the rumors too, though. I have noticed that a few stores have closed down around that stretch in the past coupla years.

Same action has been going on at the DeGraw pprojects. There have been rumors for years that they wre going to close or condoize this housing
project. I know Guiliani, when he was mayor, wanted
to condoize the projects. You would think with all the homeless out there. they could utilize the space
instead of keeping it vacant

Urban myth.

It's a strategy that's been used before, and apparently used very intensely here -- moving people to east new york, where the value of property is not skyrocketing. Apparently Metro Tech wants it for student housing. But by the time those buildings are empty, the value will be too high even for Metro Tech and the city will be wiser to condoize it.
City wants to make money, big shocker.
