Park Slope Armory
I'm looking at apartments in the south Slope, and curious what's going on with the Armory these days. Would you live across the street? Is it creepy late-night? How will traffic be routed once the sports mega-plex opens? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

It couldnt be worse than a creepy huge building that has a small women's shelter in it.

PS I lived by the building for years before I knew what was in it. I never saw or heard of any problems with the shelter.

I remember when the had rolla derbys in that Armory, I kid you all not. It was a site to behold, for sore eyes on a Saturday nite. They also had differing types of wrassling, problably in the early 60s and late 50s.

The movies were using it quiet a bit, Ragtime and others like that not too long ago. It is an overall exciting place to be near usually and never much problem with the ladies either, once they learned it takes little efforts to get on with the neighborhood people who leave around the Armory. Also at a certain time a couple of years ago them cats in albany tried to strip out all the historicals, including the statute in front. They put that statue right back, because it was paid for by prescription of the local area folks after the world war I. The other civil war stuff from inside, they cowards jacked out like booty from Rome.

I live on that block, though not directly across from the Armory. We've never had any problems, and don't find it "creepy" at all, especially since they took the scaffolding down a couple years ago.
Supposedly, the Armory will become a community athletic facility, to supplement local schools without gym facilities, and it's also supposed to have an indoor track which people can join/use. That's the word as of four years ago, at least, but very little seems to be going on inside. The womens' shelter has never been a factor at all, they're good neighbors.
Sure wish it still had roller derby, though...

i just read something in the BrooklynPaper(?) that mentioned that they had put out a RFP to get bids on making it into an athletic facililty on a ten year lease. They seem to be moving forward on making that plan a reality.

Are you looking on 14th or 15th Street? The Armory
is behind construction schedule but will become a track and field sports facility. 14th street is nice with lots of trees and a whole lot less traffic. 15th Street is much different, lots of traffic and no trees. 15th Street will be the entrance to the new facility so most likely the place where the school buses will park. !5th will be getting about 50 or so new housing units on the block in the next two years when they finally finish the construction at 400 and 406.
One thing I hate about the Armory's !5th street side is that they pick up the shelter's garbage every night around 1:00am and the truck is VERY loud.

I'm a parent of kids at PS 107 which is across the street and has no gym space. According to the principal, part of the negotiations for building use included that the school would have access during 9am to 3pm. Last parents were told was open by spring once the contractor to run the site was in place.

I live on 15th between 8th and PPW. It's a great nabe. Can the streets around the Armory be a bit loud? Well, it depends on your definition of loud. Flatbush Ave. loud? Manhattan loud? No way. Relatively loud compared to the gentle tranquility of a 2nd St. or a Montgomery St. or one of those Park Slope blocks where you can hear a pin drop? Well, yeah. But the places are priced accordingly. In other words, it's a nice neighborhood and having a gym open to community kids should make it nicer.
