Wood Panels for Garbage Pickup
We are spending this weekend tearing out all the wood panelling in our basement. My job is to pound out the nails from each board. Its taking forever. Does anyone know if the DSNY will have issues if I just cut off the tip with a grinder, so its flush with the surface? Does that do the trick?
Also, I've read their pamphlet and it says I can bundle them 2ft high by 4ft high. The planks are approx. 6 or 8 inches wide. This bundle seems extremely heavy to me... does anyone know if there is a weight limit at overrides the dimension? thanks!

Dumpster Details?
Could anyone tell me how far in advance you need to rent a dumpster, if the dumpster company handles parking permits, and if you can arrange for it to be delivered and picked up in a 24-hour window so the neighbors don't use it. And about how much it costs, and any companies you would recommend? Or should I just throw out 200 bags of trash over 40 weeks?

Basement Ceiling
We bought about a year ago and are gradually doing all of the "must do" projects. One of those is to sister a few joists in the basement that were not properly repaired following some old termite damage. To save some money, I am taking down the basement ceiling (drywall) myself, to make sure we know the scope of the job before we hire a contractor to do the job.
Question: Above the oil furnace/boiler, instead of drywall, there are several pieces of rusty painted sheet metal covering the joists. Can I safely remove the metal too, or is there a reason that I should leave it there? I don't know the condition of the joists above it, but there is some damage nearby, so if the metal is not serving a purpose, I would like to remove it.
Thank you. Contractor recommendations are welcome as well.

Scrap Metal
My daughter's community daycare school is cleaning out its basement and found a lot of clean scrap metal. Does anyone know if there is a recycler that will come and take it out for free? Better still, pay the school?

Bringing stuff to a dump
I've got a bunch of plywood trimmings and a handful of old doors (in very bad shape), that I'd like to take to the dump myself. It doesn't make sense that I have to pay someone to haul them. Since it's from a home renovation project, I don't think I can put them outside with the trash.
I looked on nyc.gov to find out about bringing stuff to the dump myself, but can't seem to find anything.

Exposing Brick....
I'm thinking about breaking through drywall in my apartment to expose brick wall and wonder if there is any danger of exposure to asbestos. The building is a federal brick, over a hundred year old type, in Park Slope. Does anyone know?

Recycle/Crush old bricks
I have a fair amount of old bricks (some broken) that I would like to recycle and crush to use in landscaping. Does anyone know of any crushing services in the area (either on-site or offsite)? Thanks for the help.
