First the Gates, Now the Signs?

gate-thief-072108.jpg
Last week, we and a number of others reported on the mysterious gate thief plaguing brownstone Brooklyn. Now, apparently, stoop sale signs are also at risk. The Daily Slope reports that someone has been raiding the neighborhood, stripping it of announcements--maybe he finds all those used can openers and curtains a menace? Here's the description: "He’s white, got a slight build, knobby knees, usually wearing a large gardener’s hat." Anybody seen him?

Walkable Williamsburg

bedfordmap.jpg
Manhattan's not the only borough where busy thoroughfares will turn into bike- and foot-friendly paradises this summer. Inspired by the Mayor's Summer Streets program, Bedford Avenue between Metropolitan and North 3rd will be closed to vehicular traffic for four Saturdays, from noon to 7PM--they call it "Williamsburg Walks." "If you build more streets, you get more cars. If you build more pedestrian-friendly areas, street furniture and bike lanes, you will get more pedestrians, bikers and a social environment for the community," say the organizers, and if they deem it a success, they'll try to make Bedford a pedestrian route on a more regular basis. Anybody planning to cruise down car-free Bburg?

Quote of the Day

quotation-icon.jpgTony Avella should stay in Queens where he belongs. This guy is a real flake. He doesnt even know what he's protecting. Maybe we should just bulldoze everything and farm the land, thats what morons like him call progress.
