House is too hot.

Hello all, Maybe someone can give some advice. I recently brought a digital programable thermostat (honeywell). It has varying temparture settings rangeing from 62-72f. However, the temparture always reads much warmer about 80f. I can't take it. Im opeaning windows, and I'm afraid of what my bill is going to look like. I am a new lanlord and have haven't gotten a bill yet for heating as yet. P.S. There were two wires coming out the wall when I installed it (blue/green) I even tried switching them around, still the same outcome. I contacted a heating contractor who said I probably mixed the wires up some way.

Should I let them use my electricity?

The people who bought the vacant house next door to me want to began work on the house. Their problem is they dont have electricity in the house yet. A woman came over this evening and asked they could use the outlet in my front yard. On and off for the next couple of weekends. They would be willing to give me $50 toward by bill. Is this a risky thing to do? What do you guys think?

Tenant has a washing machine.

I just found out that my tenant who just moved in July has a washing machine in her apartment. I don't think I specified no washing machines on her lease. What should I do. I did not say anything to her and her lease there is 10mths left on her lease.

Smoke alarm

Help! How do you get an hard wired smoke & CO alarm to stop chirping. I replaced the back up battery, reset it, and soon as I get off the ladder-the damn thing starts chirping again. I was able to stop one from doing this, the 2nd unsucessful. Should I buy a new alarm all together, or do I need an electrician?

I wish I could. They are adorable, however I just got a new pup, he's a handful and I already have a cat. Don't worry. You won't have any problems finding a home for them.

I did let them use it this morning. The gave the money up front as promised. They said they would be done by around 5pm. I pretty much saw the tools they had. Nothing extravagant. I try to live by the "do onto others, as you would have them do onto you". I just hope I don't have to learn a costly lesson from all this. I'll let all of you know what the outcome was in the next couple of weeks.

Thats the same thing I was thinking. Thanks for your input.

I too have an awful smell in my basement. I thought it would get better as the wheather got cooler. It has not changed at all. I have no mold or mildew as well. OP: Where did you purchase the home mold test? I am also thinking of the air purifier and dehumidfier idea.

Thanks, I will both of these a try. (post #2-come to think off it, there was an energizer battery in it before I replaced it with a Duracell).

The smoke alarm in my place has been doing the same thing. It has been doing it for 2 solid weeks. (sigh)

I think it's fine to let them use your outlet, but would want more information first. What will they be running? Do you have sufficient power from that outlet? What happens if their use adds more than $50 to your bill? It's not that hard to get Con Ed to restore service, so personally I'd ask why they haven't been able to do that. I think it's better to clarify some of these questions before giving a blanket okay.

Just ask them what they're using it for. $50 will probably cover it. It's a pretty easy way of being a good neighbor as well. I'd have no problem with it.

Look at a few of your old electric bills and then compare them to what happens with them hooked up if you tink its going to be a problem

I'll go further than vinca...Don't do it!

If they have an electrical fire in their house or a workman gets electrocuted, they'll sue you and your insurance won't cover it. Also they may be running a meth shop that requires electricity to break down the chemical components, and you can be charged as a criminal accessory if caught. And what if they connect it accidentally to their solar cells making your meter run backwards, and Con-Ed charges you with an illegal negative-meter connection?

In other words, use common sense. A commodity sorely lacking these days.

CMU, it's not common-sense to cling to all the worst things that could happen.

It's much more likely that the new neighbors are going to be using power tools over a couple of weekends, will get their own electricity soon, and will, in addition to paying for the electricity, feel slightly endebted to the OP for the favor.

The chance of a bad outcome is slim.

(meth lab? negative meter connection?)

The chance of a good outcome is excellent. Common sense dictates saying Yes (perhaps after asking some more questions).

Maybe some of those people who've complained recently about mouse problems. Even the tiniest kitten will discourage mice. When my first cat died we were cat-less for about six weeks. Back then [very much pre-retirement] I would get up at 5 AM to run. I frequently heard what I presume were mice running around on top of our kitchen's tin ceiling. That stopped almost immediately after we got a new kitten, although AFAIK he only caught, and ate, one mouse in his entire 15 year life. His successor is an equally good mouser, who seems to look forward to dealing with the rodent population of the houses we rent in Vermont in the Summers.

Joke/Satire/Poking fun at people who worry too much about normal events/etc ;).

Hilarious!

Sorry I didn't see the sarcasm... up does seem to be down these days. I saw the words "common sense" and immediately thought the worst.
