Where do I get a chimney cover?
We have the elements entering our building and raining in through our mantles because there is no chimney cover on the chimney on our roof. Does anyone know where I can get a cover for the chimney like all my neighbors seem to have? Many thanks

Fire up the boiler?
It's such a predictable October thread, but we're new owners of a 4 story townhouse and we're looking for the right way to awaken our 150,000 BTU gas boiler from its summer slumber.
A plumber is perhaps in order, as our knowledge of these devices is very limited, but some have said that service contracts are the way to go, and I'd love a recommendation for that route if anyone out there is satisfied with the maintenance the receive from a plumbing / heating company.
Or, does anyone else feel like this is superfluous, and a one-time visit from a solid plumber is the way to go?
Many thanks.

Funny, they've been sweeping (and ticketing) on my block, which is within these borders, for weeks now.

Don't they do Jiu-Jitsu at Master Sabu on Fulton?
Someone was talking about opening a gym on Fulton.
Come on, Fulton!

I hope it's good, and I'll certainly support it. If it's like the Buka in DC and Atlanta, the reviews suggest it'll fit in with what already exists on Fulton. Not exactly pushing the envelope though.

dear husband of lady opening this store:
ignore the other comment. it's a great location, filling a major void in north clinton hill. clinton hill is swimming with kids these days and "still hip" is killing it (in the good way). bon chance.

They buy drugs, Heather. I've seen it several times on the corner of St James and Fulton. That's the crux of my beef. It keeps the dealers around too.

I talk to meth clinic users all the time, thanks momo.
I have talked to a drooling old black woman about kids, grandkids, life, and happiness and found her to be wise and sweet. I have picked up a pack of cigarettes discarded on the street by a white man who came out of the clinic and told him how I felt about treating the neighborhood with respect.
You can play the race card if you want, but the methadone clinic situation is much more complex than that.
Posted by: Lothar of the Clinton Hill People at September 29, 2009 12:30 PM in response to 925 Fulton In Turnaround
Perhaps Mr. Brownstoner was only suggesting that the Methadone Clinic needs to be spruced up like the building with the Stevie Wonder quote graffiti on it that is the headline of this article. Put a plant in a pot and put it on the sidewalk and make the yuppies happy.
They're also fixing up the "Future Home of Salvation Baptist Church" building next to the post office. Methinks it has something to do with a Bloomberg policy where blighted buildings need to be functional or sold.
The meth clinic is annoying to me because I've witnessed their clientele littering the streets with butts, getting in fights, partaking in drug deals, and otherwise loitering. The clinic would improve its standing in the neighborhood if they kept closer tabs on what its users do after they get their fix.

I'm not sure what kind of food. I meant to ask the guy who was smashing bricks out of the back wall with a sledgehammer but I forgot.
I think the guy who said "Nigerian" is probably going to be correct though, since it's his one and only post ever at Brownstoner. He's in the know.
My neighbor told me Joloff was getting gutted today -- knowing the owner, I'd just assume its more renovation. Anybody know?
Posted by: Lothar of the Clinton Hill People at September 22, 2009 5:03 PM in response to New Restaurant/Bar for Fulton Street
They put three windows in the back of the building to add a little natural light to a building that's like 80 feet deep.
They wanted a garden patio but the building takes up the whole lot depth.
I am a mother f*cking wellspring of information about this place.

I know nothing except it's a super deep building and when I asked a worker what was going in there, he said "a restaurant and bar" and someone called to him to correct him from inside... then he said "I mean, a restaurant."
Not supposed to tell the neighbors about the bar part yet, I suppose.

Great news! I feel like Fulton's starting to step up to the plate. There's a new restaurant/bar going in next to the Vet Across From The Met, and that hilariously run down building with the Stevie Wonder quote on it between Waverly and Clinton is finally getting worked on too.
As for the meth clinic clients, they seem to have discovered the new bodega at the corner of Cambridge Place and built a nest on its cozy sidewalk.
Posted by: Lothar of the Clinton Hill People at September 16, 2009 11:07 AM in response to Money Starting to Flow to Fulton Street
Not to be insensitive, but there's a stop at Putnam/Grand which is literally ONE block away. You could throw an egg and hit it from the senior center.
To reinstitute the stop at the Met would mean asking a bus to stop three times over the course of four blocks.
If safety concerns at Putnam/Grand are the reason for this uproar, I would say the community and the police should work to make that intersection more secure.

I do think that if rezoning to avoid large development was a decision that was made regardless of the purpose of said development, we ought to consider this spot-re-rezoning without regard to the merits of low income elderly housing.
Low income elderly housing is as politically volatile an issue as banning smoking in day care facilities for toddlers, which is to say, of course it's a good idea. Whether it's a good idea for this block of Lefferts Place needs to be discussed as a matter of landmarks and historical context, which was the reasoning behind the original rezoning.
It's one thing to be flexible but it's another thing to be completely hypocritical (I am looking in your direction, Johnny Dew-Dew).
This block of Lefferts Place is not a dump, though it's not as beautiful as the one between Grand and St James. Also, the Lefferts Hotel no longer leaves a mint on your pillow as a welcoming gesture.

Umm, the "crappy bodega" next door, Pena's, is awesome, with nice people, friendly cats, delicious cheap sandwiches made with love and attention, and great prices. When it goes, there goes the neighborhood. I don't know what "program" you expect Pena's to "get with" ... you must be a realtor.

Everyone hated Gehry's design when it was first made public and now people are pining for his "high end" touch. Please. Put up a basketball arena where there is currently rubble and weeds, it's going to have a big ad for a bank on the side of it no matter who made the blueprint.

From what I've read the AY plans were flawed, traffic will be a nightmare, taxpayer money was acquired through suspicious means, and eminent domain was not appropriate.
That being said I'd rather have AY go forward than walk past that giant ugly hole for ten more years.
You guys are admirable holding to your ideals in the midst of this. You remind me of the Lothar of the Clinton Hill People that voted for Ralph Nader in 2000 and then wished he didn't after the next eight years nearly dissolved our country.

I figured they'd fix the sidewalks on the north side of Fulton as soon the weather warmed up a bit. No such luck. A barely-functional Fulton St is as high as they seem to want to set the bar.
I saw a guy with a yellow BID shirt on with a broom on Fulton a month ago. He was hanging out on a corner chatting with people. Haven't seen anyone since, but the trash cans on the corner of Fulton & St James are constantly overflowing into the street.
I feel bad for the businesses that had actual hopes for the BID accomplishing something for them other than higher expenses.

This place is a stand-out experience. Food is fine, but the charm of the restaurant, and it's hosts, is unique and refreshing. Tom's is exactly how you run a business and why they've been around as long as they have, through ups and downs and changes in the neighborhood. I implore you to check it out, hopefully while there's a bit of a line. That's part of the experience.
Really nice block and really nice renovation, but I think $500/sq foot is closer to the going rate.
A million bucks! FINAL offer.

The space next door has a sign that it's available for $4700, and it's much bigger.

Say what you will about the layout and the service, but I'm hard pressed to think of a better place in all of Brooklyn for a casual meal with a newspaper. May the Choice empire continue its expansion and domination until it's a global chain and its quality is a distant memory.
Burger is awesome too.
Looks like a hospital. Really nice on the inside, though, and the location is good with a subway right there and equal access to Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights.
Good luck Izzys.

The first two times I found that green lettuce-sauce for the bread completely bland and confounding. The third time I added a bunch of salt to it and thought maybe I understood what they were going for. It's a weird first impression.
Be prepared to order a lot of courses and spend a lot of money if you go there, that's really the best way to enjoy what they have to offer.

Hallelujah. I hope Fulton is running two-way again before the end of the year. Two observations:
The Washington Mutual space (between Sister's Hardware and Embora) is "For Lease By Owner" -- goodness, this is a huge space in a gorgeous building by a busy intersection, and someone ought to do something great with that space. How do I pitch it to the Ft Greene / Clinton Hill food co-op people?
Anyone else notice "CHOICE ATLANTIC" opening on Atlantic Ave between Grand and Classon!?

Let's give this place a Chance (pun intended) -- I'm a font-judger like the next guy, but when I lived in "BoCoCa" I hated Angry Wade's more than the devil ... I hated the stucco exterior, the douchey crowd, everything. I once had someone ask me for directions to Angry Wade's and I pleaded with them to go somewhere else instead.
Then one afternoon I wanted to watch a Met game. It was 95 degrees out and I didn't have cable. I knew the game would be on in Angry Wade's. I did the unspeakable. I walked in -- the air conditioning felt amazing. There was free popcorn. They had Brooklyn Lager on tap. The game was on in HD. The bartender, who was either from Long Island or New Jersey, was friendly, if slutty looking. I spent a couple of hours there and left happy.
If this place has a good burger, or shows soccer matches, or sweeps the cigarette butts in front of the building, or adds anything remotely of use to the neighborhood, I welcome it.
This stretch between Vanderbilt and Clinton is booked solid now. Other stretches of Fulton further east beginning to follow. Hear ye.
