WOOD FLOOR HELP

My husband and I are in the process of buying an apartment in brooklyn heights. We would like to completely redo the floors as they are mix matched from years of partial repair and also to fix the 2" slope (requiring them to go to the subfloor). This is our first adventure into renovating and I was wondering if anyone has comments concerning types of wood? I am specifically wondering about the really dark stained wood and whether it shows scratches and dust easier? also it's not a big apartment but has 9' ceilings and I've heard some people say it makes the space seem smaller and some say it doesn't matter.....

is there anything we need to be weary of with going to the subfloor?

I've looked through the archives and haven't found anything specific to these questions so I'd really appreciate any thoughts, experiences and comments you might have,

thank you!

I'm VERY curious to know what the maintenance required is as well!

ok. i've done some research and it seems that similiar pieces are going anywhere from $750.00-$1200.00. This particular mantle is in great shape and has some carving details. I can give specific measurements if needed. I'm happy to sell it for $450 or best offer. Please let me know.

I know you mentioned expensive-- we just received a quote for $18k for leveling, installing and staining. (they say they have to take the toilet and sink out of the bathroom because the level will change) our apt. is about 800 or 850sqft. does that seem right??

THANK YOU for taking the time to comment.

i was thinking of going with the prefinished stained floors so im assuming when you're talking about a stain you're using unfinished wood? is that a lot more expensive in terms of paying for labor? the current flooring is parque (sp?) and mismatched. the color of it also doesn't go well with the exposed brick on the walls. (im trying to figure out how to post an image.)

if you have color suggestions once you see the photo, please let me know!

do you have contact info for RMD flooring? couldn't find it when i tried to look...

that sounds about $10k too high to me. Is that with the flooring included? I just had the first floor in my house done, 20 x 50, with a 3 x 3/4 Brazilian Teak Pre-finished flooring, a new 1/2in plywood floor on top of the old sub-floor to level it and I paid $9k for the whole thing. You might have to pay more because you are in a coop and need someone insured but it shouldn't be that high.

Thassos marble is a relatively soft material, so I would not use it as floor tiling but only for the walls. Apart from that the only thing to remember is not to let any bathroom cleaners or chlorine to come into contact with it, otherwise you will get permanent stains. No maintanance is required, oly soap and water. My bathroom which was done 7 years ago in white Thassos marble (walls and countertop)and black granite for the flooring looks great without any maintanance.

OP here, thanks 12:00 for the info; we would use the white Thassos on the walls, not floor. I had heard you have to have the white Thassos resealed once per year. Have you not done that, and it still looks good? Also, I think we would get the subway tiles size (3 x 6), if that size is any different than larger pieces. If you have had yours for seven years and it looks great still that sounds promising!

My tiles are 12in. X 12in. but I do not know if size has something to do with treatments. Mine have never been resealed during these past 7 years, as I said they have been washed with water and soap once per week and nothing else. I do not know details of the original treatment they had before I installed them but I think that the surface which is shiny, has been polished by mechanical means and no sealents were used.I will try to repost as soon as I get more info on this.
