I have lived here since August 2007, a few blocks south from the cross streets you mention. My cohabiting boyfriend feels very safe here, and likes the proximity to Park Slope with a smaller price tag, as well as having the benefit of PPW shops just around the corner. We both love the park, though the F train isn't always a reliable train.
As a female, I've been catcalled on my way home from the F more times than I care to remember, in ways that make me feel less admired and more threatened. However, I am a few blocks farther south than the area you mention, and the farther south you go, the less gentrified the nabe. In summary, if you're bringing a wife and kids, reconsider or get a third opinion; if you're alone, I think you'll be fine.
