« May We Take Your Coat, Sir? | Main | Opening Up the Arch » February 14, 2005All Systems Go, Proceed with DemoWe got our Buildings Permit last week--the final piece of the puzzle after receiving the Certificate of No Effect from Landmarks and the Certificate of No Harassment from HPD in the preceding two weeks. So the GC got in a couple of days of demo at the end of last week and we went by Saturday morning to check it out. Unfortunately, the pregnant Mrs. Brownstoner isn't allowed in the house during this time because of all the lead dust that is kicking around, so she's having to follow along with all of you. This first photo is taken standing in the front room of the Parlor floor looking back. This was exciting because it's the first time we could see from one end of the house to the other. ![]() This second photo is taken in the center space of the parlor floor, where the closets and hallway toilet formerly were. Posted by: anon at February 14, 2005 9:57 AM Thanks for the tip. Point well taken. Posted by: brownstoner at February 14, 2005 11:06 AM Very exciting! Seeing those old exposed beams reminds me of a story that occured when my childhood home was being restored. One day my mother went up to look at the progress of the demolition of the attic and saw, much to her horror, that a dirty word was written on one of the historic structural beams. She ran downstairs and stared yelling at the GC, insulted that one of the workers had written the offending "graffiti". The GC pleaded ingnorance of the transgression. After much back and forth and consultaion, it was discovered that in fact, the word was written on the beam when the house was built in the 19th century. It turns out it was a mispellling of the word CAUNT, which I believe is a term for a type of beam. So be warned - you never know what you'll find when you start knocking down walls! Posted by: Whitbo at February 14, 2005 11:58 AM Not to nitpick, but those are actually studs in the second photo, not beams. Studs are the vertical members (both loadbearing and non-loadbearing) that frame and support walls. Beams are horizontal structural members. Floor and roof joists typically frame into beams, which in turn carry their cumulative structural loads over to columns or loadbearing walls, which in turn transmit the forces to the building foundations. If they were beams, you certainly wouldn't want to just demo them without providing supporting bracing for the floor or roof they support! Sorry to browbeat if you already know all this, but I thought it might be a useful point of clarification, especially as your blog will be a source of reference for others. It's kind of like calling a knee joint an "arm," or referring to a house built in 1990 as a "Colonial." Anyway, congratulations and good luck! The building looks fantastic! Cheers!
