Forget Ikea, Dig The Vintage Marble

marble

We scored 42 square feet of inch-thick vintage marble from Build It Green NYC this weekend for $10 a foot. Rescued from an old theater in the West 40's, this should be plenty to do the counter tops in the owner and rental kitchens. We don't know their former use in the theater--maybe something in the bathroom? There are a couple of slabs left of slighter darker tones if anyone's interested.

we put marble in our kitchen- against all suggestion because of how porous it is- it was from red hook marble- it was honed and we sealed it- we love it. although it wasn't vintage (we paid full price-ugh), it has this strong vein running through- it's very elegant and sets the room off.

I recently wrote a small sidebar about Build It Green for the NYT House & Home section (it accompanied another piece I wrote, about dumpster diving for building materials). The aptly named Justin Green at BIG told me that the marble was from an old shower in the theater. I'm glad it found a good home!
