Here's the bannister leading up to the top floor. It still needs a final light sanding and final coat but that will have to wait until we clear out for a long weekend--don't want the little ones breathing that stuff. Posted by brownstoner at September 10, 2005 7:40 AM CommentsLook great. Did you have to replace any spindles and if so, how did you do it? Posted by: Anonymous at September 12, 2005 9:06 AM Very sharp. Posted by: AVERAGE JOE at September 12, 2005 12:09 PM Looks great, what did you finish it with? Wax? Posted by: Anonymous at September 12, 2005 12:14 PM anyone else think that only the tread should be painted the dark color, and not the moulding trim pieces? Posted by: jako at September 13, 2005 6:24 PM Interesting point, Jako. Think you might be onto something. Posted by: Brownstoner at September 14, 2005 10:27 AM No, I think it looks classy with molding and trim painted as well. Posted by: Park Sloper at September 14, 2005 4:11 PM By the way, are the treads painted black? I can't quite tell from the photos? I'm curious to know what you used, since I have a similar stairway that needs work, and I was thinking of painting the treads(and much-less-ornate spindles, but resanding and refinishing the banister itself). Posted by: pilgrim at September 14, 2005 10:23 PM The paint on the veritcal trim definitely makes it look a bit "off" imo. Posted by: sba at September 16, 2005 9:12 AM Brownstoner...I have a photo of our redone stairs that show what I mean about the vertical trim being painted...how do I post a photo, or do I send it to you by email? Posted by: sba at September 16, 2005 9:16 AM just email to brownstoner@brownstoner.com (not too big please!) thanks Posted by: Brownstoner at September 16, 2005 11:55 AM Sent the photo under subject heading "staircase photo"...hope it helps.
