A Quick Note

We've decided not to document the interior decoration of the house for two reasons: 1) It wasn't part of our original intention and 2)We're finding that our skin isn't quite as thick when it comes to defending the color of our sofa. Maybe because it's just that much more of an intimate subject. Hope everyone can understand that. Anyway, we'll continue to document the remaining details of the build out--and within the next couple of weeks we're hoping to have two new reno blogs starting. Thanks, B'stoner

Comments

Perfectly understandable. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by the nerve of some of the commenters...

For what it's worth, I think you did a wonderful job inside and out. Even the snarkiest of commentors couldn't find fault with the majority of work you've done. You and your wife have great taste and you've provided an invaluable service to the community by opening up your home to everyone. So thanks!

It's a shame that some people felt the need to take pot shots at your interior decorations. I'm always amazed at how people will say something under guise of anonymity that they would never say in person.

It would be great, though, to have a final (as final as something like this ever is) montage of the entire place when you are done. Understand if you are hesitant to do so, but I am sure I speak not only for myself when I say that after the months and months of following along, it would be great to see the finished product.

Anyway, thanks for the many hours of enjoyment provided while I am supposed to be working!

Brownstoner-

I agree with the above posts. You did a great job. Im doing total gut myself and I dont think I could handle the criticism.

BTW- Whatever happened to Mrs. Brownstoners' blog? Did I miss it or was that a joke or sometheing else?
Thanks for all your efforts.

Thanks for the nice comments. We'll definitely put up a final tour in a couple months when we're finished decorating and, as mentioned, in the meantime keep updated on anything renovation-oriented.

Posted by: Brownstoner at October 3, 2005 3:28 PM

i understand your point of view, but needless to say, i'm bummed. while we don't share the same aesthetic, seeing what you are doing (mixing the old and the new) really helped me to think outside the box in my own home in terms of decorating. i got a lot of good ideas for our master bath just from making suggestions for yours.
i do look forward to seeing the whole thing when it's done.
in the meantime, are you going to be revamping your garden and updating the site with those photos and info? if not, would you be interested in possibly having a section for other's garden renos on your site?

we are actually a bit deer-in-the-headlights about the garden - it's a big pit of dirt and glass shards, with a little lead dust/debris thrown in - so we would welcome other people's experiences, photos, progress reports, etc...

Sorry that some jacka$$ hurt your feelings. I for one have been LOVING watching your house progress. Don't pay that lurker any mind. Your attention to the details is amazing!

Thanks for letting us peek in.

Gardens are works in progress, they are never really finished. For someone with a little space like yours, don't be afraid to be ruthless in saving any plant, tree or shrub that doesn't pull its own weight. Find some great specimen to build around, visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens to see how plants hold up to our winters.

Can't wait to see the new reno blogs. rock on.

A red velvet couch is classic. Don't let people get you down. I didn't see them posting a photos of their couch...

I've just begun to tackle the wilderness that is my backyard, with no gardening experience, and I have to say, it's really satisfying. I uncovered a stone path around the perimeter that had been buried in a few decades' worth of debris. Last weekend, I planted some English ivy in the hopes that it will someday turn into a beautiful green carpet over the railing of my deck. Like everything involved in renovating a home, gardening seems to be a process of trial and error, but somehow, this part feels a lot less stressful.

awww that's certainly too bad...

I certainly enjoyed the interior reno-blog while it lasted as I'm not very handy so I'm a bit more knowledgable of that matter. however, I understand your decision. hopefully you realize that everyone doesn't share the same sentiment as some jealous people who are not too nice. best of luck.

personally, i think that the couch might be really great with the right lighting. so lets blame it on the camera flash. of course, the renovation was so subtle with the neutral colors, i assumed that you were going with something alittle more like that. the rich ruby tones...it was just unexpected.

Ah, gee, I said I didn't like the color of your sofa, and now I've ruined it for everyone? I'm sorry, I truly am! (Are you upset about the shower curtain, too?)

Won't you at least let us see your amazing room-size, custom-built closet once you've organized and filled it up? I think everyone would really be interested in seeing how it works in practice and whether you would have built any of the spaces differently in retrospect.

For the record: my own furniture sucks. It definitely needs to be upgraded to pay homage to the nice space around it, but it's a cost that will have to wait awhile....

but then someone might comment on their clothes : )

Thanks for letting us see your hard work, and sharing your experiences, they have been invaluable. We'll be starting our Boerum Hill project in the next several months and have benefited greatly from your (and readers) contributions and experiences.

IMO your taste is great. I imagine that those critical of your taste have none to speak of. It's a good thing they didn't like your style.

Yours,
A proud red sofa owner.
