Address: 334 Clinton St between DeGraw and Kane
Name: The James Naughton House
Neighborhood: Cobble Hill (Cobble Hill Historic District)
Year Built: 1850, remodeled 1888
Architectural Style: Greek Revival to Queen Anne
Architects: Original architect unknown, remodeled by James Naughton
Why chosen: Originally the twin to 336 at left, 334 Clinton was tricked out with an ornamented Queen Anne tower, bay, and mansard roof, by architect James Naughton, Superintendant of Buildings for the Brooklyn Board of Education. Since he was the architect of the magnificent Boys High School, in Bed Stuy, as well as many other fine schools, it is not surprising that he did such an excellent job here. Would that modern fixers could do as well. GMAP
Oh yeah, I used to wonder about this house whenever I walked by. It does stand out from its neighbors. But in a good way.
North Heights beat me to it. I walk CDog on Congress every day, and I realized immediately the house being renovated there is the new twin to this house.
No, Dave, I never watched a single one of them, but I do try to keep up with the lingo of the young’uns.
Nice, but isn’t it now “out of context” with the house next door?
I’ve always loved passing this house – it’s such a great feature of the block.
Someone a few blocks away on Congress Street got LPC to approve plans last fall to create a twin of this house, complete with tower and mansard roof. Anyone know if work has started?
If my faulty memory serves me right, this was 1st house in area that hit the $1m mark (1999). Or at least 1st one that was in news as such.
“tricked out”
I didn’t know MM was a fan of all those shows on SPEED.
