Community Workshop Will Reimagine the Future of East New York Train Station
Community members and architecture students will brainstorm ideas for the transformation of LIRR Substation 2 into a community facility.

Share your vision for a bit of East New York history at a community workshop designed to spark ideas for preserving the Long Island Railroad Substation 2.
Hosted by Preserving East New York (PENY) and East New York Community Land Trust (ENYCLT), the event will bring together community members and students at the Spitzer School of Architecture at City College to brainstorm ideas for the transformation of the long-shuttered structure into a community facility.
The red-brick building at 2 Snediker Avenue was completed in time for the July 1905 launch of electric train service on the Long Island Railroad. It was one of five substations constructed between 1904 and 1905 for the new service, including another in Brooklyn at 1020 Atlantic Avenue. PENY, ENYCLT, and other local organizations hosted a “heart-bombing” at the site in 2023 to draw attention to the potential of the vacant building.
This event will take place on Sunday, March 9 at the New Lots Library, scheduled for its own transformation, at 665 New Lots Avenue. The community workshop will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and will be followed by a group discussion led by PENY. Details about the event can be seen in a PENY Instagram post.
