HDC’s Annual 'Six to Celebrate' Highlights Crow Hill and Little Caribbean Neighborhoods

Preservation and advocacy efforts in two Brooklyn neighborhoods will get a boost this year with inclusion in the Historic Districts Council’s annual “Six to Celebrate” campaign.
This year the preservation nonprofit’s chosen communities include Crow Hill in Crown Heights and the Little Caribbean area of Flatbush. Each neighborhood was nominated by a local group looking to advocate for the protection of the architecture and the promotion of the history of their community.
The Crown Heights North Association, which has been focused on the preservation of the neighborhood since its founding in 2002, is concerned about development on Franklin Avenue and will be collaborating with HDC on moving the education and landmarking process forward for a proposed fourth Crown Heights North Historic District.
In Flatbush, activists Kennya Cummings and Shelley Worrell of CaribBEING showcase the history of the Caribbean diaspora in the city and will work with HDC to highlight the places that have become iconic to the community, particularly along the stretches of Flatbush, Church and Utica avenues.
Other areas included on the list this year are Parkchester and Van Nest in The Bronx, the Bayley Seton Campus in Staten Island and the Penn Development Area in Manhattan.
HDC launched the Six to Celebrate initiative in 2011. Each year the chosen groups receive hands-on assistance from HDC on strategic planning, advocacy and outreach. If you are curious about past Six to Celebrate designations, or nominating your own neighborhood, you can check out all the details on the program website.
