Community activists looking to bring some attention to their preservation efforts have an opportunity to get the assistance of the Historic Districts Council via its annual “Six to Celebrate” program.
The initiative launched in 2011 and each year six preservation projects receive hands-on assistance from HDC on strategic planning, advocacy and outreach. So far, 54 organizations have participated in the program and, according to HDC, 33 individual landmarks and five historic districts have been locally designated while other gains have included listings on the National Register of Historic Places, contextual zoning and neighborhood surveys. Some of the Brooklyn neighborhoods that have been part of the program have included East Flatbush, Center Slope, Bay Ridge, East New York, Gowanus and Greenpoint.
Applications are being accepted accepted through December 31 and winners will be announced in March 2022. The application is available online but a hard copy can also be obtained by contacting HDC.
