We got an email yesterday from someone who trying to decide whether to lay an new cement floor in her basement or to do something a little more ambitious that would require some excavation. She reminded us that there were two posts in the Forum in April on this subject and was curious to know how the two projects panned out. If either of the original posters are reading this, we’d love to hear an update.
Please check your contract, also let me know who your contractor was. Thanks in advance.
The renovation of the cellar was part of a full scale redo of the entire house. I can check the contract to see what the bid was for that part of the work.
We went only as far down as we needed to make the cellar usable without ducking. You can excavate as far as you want, but you may need to support the exterior walls to do so.
if you’re filing for this it can be extremely expensive, but it’s completely worth it if you go for it. if you don’t file for it it’s cheap and very completely worth it. if you don’t file for it and you get caught it’s achingly expensive and possibly worth it. enjoy!
A little off subject, but does anyone know how much above ground an english basement needs to be to be a legal rental apartment?
Me and my husband are seriously considering this. Who did the work for you? How far do you think you can safely go down?
How much did it cost?
Not sure about the original posts, but as part of the renovation of our cellar, we had it excavated about 4″ to allow for slightly more than 6′ clear and then had a new floor poured. The excavation was accomplished by lots of laborers by hand in one day (20′ x 45′).
