We have a bunch of old light fixtures we’ve been accumulating that we need to get rewired asap. Not surprisingly, we want to find an affordable, reliable place to do the job. Suggestions?
Thanks,
B’stoner

  1. anon: what is this? me manly-man contest? b’stoner clearly has the wisdom to do what he/she knows and leave what they don’t to the pros…i say hats off to good old fashioned common sense and humility.

  2. Safety first, of course, but why not do it yourself? Most fixtures are a snap to rewire. Regular reader here, wondering (as I often do) if Brownstoner knows which end of the screwdriver is which. What happened to good old sweat equity?

  3. Probably too far for you to travel, but for any readers on the other side of Manhattan, this is the best-kept secret in NJ for buying and restoring old lighting fixtures:

    Aladdin Lamp
    118 Monticello Ave.
    Jersey City
    201-434-2869

  4. Try the Lamp Doctor at 1944 Coney Island Avenue 718-627-0448. They have rewired a number of fixtures for me and my sister, including a very complicated chandelier from Iran and a pair of 19 c. sconces. Fairly reasonable prices and very quick service. Lots of experience with antique pieces. Fun junky storefront.
