From the Forum: Better to Rent Out a Unit in a Two-Family or Use as a Single-Family?
What expenses should a homeowner be aware of when contemplating renting out a unit in their home?
A homeowner is trying to decide whether to rent out a unit in their two-family home and is looking for advice on the risks and rewards. The top floor in their Gowanus home is about 600 square feet and they believe that they could rent it out for about $2,000 per month. What additional expenses should they expect relating to utilities, insurance and conducting background checks? How should they plan for months when the unit is vacant?
Please chime in with any advice.
