Two previous winners—one in Flatbush, the other in Crown Heights—shared the top prize this year in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s “socially distant” edition of their Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest.
Because of the pandemic, the focus this year was on the window box (there was no contest last year). Althea Joseph, representing Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures (Lincoln Place between New York and Nostrand Avenues) in Crown Heights and Carol Wilson representing the 300 East 25th Street Block Association (East 25th Street between Avenue D and Clarendon Road) in Flatbush tied in the Best Overall Window Box- Residential category.
The two blocks have a long history with the contest. This year, Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures had the most nominated window boxes in the contest, with the 300 East 25th Street Block Association not far behind. Previously, the former was awarded the Greenest Block in Brooklyn prize in 2019, while the latter won the same prize in 2016.
Michele Shelton, on Lincoln Road between Bedford and Rogers Avenues in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, took home second place in the category, while Grahame Hubbard, on Clermont Avenue between DeKalb and Willoughby Avenues in Fort Greene and Sandra Worrell, on Lefferts Avenue between Bedford and Rogers Avenues in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, shared third place.
Other awards went to Cynthia Cummings, from Bed Stuy’s 200 Decatur Street/Stuyvesant Avenue Block Association (Decatur Street between Lewis and Stuyvesant Avenues), for Best Senior’s Window Box, and Nebert Jackson of the Serenity Community Garden in Flatlands for Best Window Box in a Community Garden.
