Brooklyn is an animated place in many ways, but did you know that in the early days of animated features Brooklyn was the home to some top figures in the animation world? The studio behind the Popeye, Betty Boop and Superman cartoons was founded by Brooklyn’s Fleischer brothers, who ran one of the largest animation studios in the nation in the first half of the 21st century.

A panel entitled The Amazing and Incredible History and Future of Brooklyn Animation will explore the what made Brooklyn animation special in the past and where it’s going now. Participants will include animators John Canemaker and Jennifer Oxley, collector Tommy Stathes and archivist David Kay. Animated clips will also be screened, including selections from Fleischer Studios (Betty Boop, Popeye) Winsor McCay (Gertie the Dinosaur) and 100 Chickens (PEG + CAT).

The event will take place at Brooklyn Historical Society at 128 Pierrepont Street on Tuesday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. General admission is $5, it is free for BHS members. For more information or to acquire tickets, click here.
