Atelier Van Lieshout’s Machine-Art on View at Pioneer Works in Red Hook
Rotterdam design studio Atelier Van Lieshout’s “The CryptoFuturist and The New Tribal Labyrinth” is a large-scale installation that references factories and the industrial revolution.
Red Hook’s Pioneer Works has been temporarily transformed back into the factory it once was.
Rotterdam design studio Atelier Van Lieshout’s “The CryptoFuturist and The New Tribal Labyrinth” is a new installation that opened at the exhibition space on March 1. It’s the largest scale exhibition in the United States for the studio, which is run by artist Joep Van Lieshout.
The exhibition combines work from two different projects. “Blast Furnace” (2013), one of the main pieces in the installation, is from the “The New Tribal Labyrinth” series and consists of “an imposing structure referencing Industrial Revolution-era furnaces traditionally used to produce steel.”
Other pieces in the show are from the artist’s “CryptoFuturist” project, including works that are influenced by the Italian Futurists. This includes “Mechanical Press” (2019), a sculpture which crushes objects daily beneath its weight.
Curated by Gabriel Florenz and Natalie Kovacs, the show runs through April 14. For more information on the exhibition and other events and classes at Pioneer Works, click here.
