Take a Stroll Through Brooklyn History With Four Municipal Art Society Walking Tours in June

With the arrival of warm weather and the surge of in-person events, you can put on your walking shoes and explore Brooklyn history with guided wanders through four neighborhoods this month. The Municipal Art Society has tour offerings in Prospect Heights, Crown Heights North, Red Hook and Gowanus in June.

On Sunday, June 5, join guide Lucie Levine for a look at the transformation of Prospect Heights from rural expanse to residential neighborhood with “From Howling Wilderness to Historic District: Prospect Heights and Grand Army Plaza.”

Brownstoner columnist Suzanne Spellen will focus on the architectural treasures and important social history found in Crown Heights North on Saturday, June 11.

Red Hook past and present, from longshoreman haunts to the Robotic Church, will be explored on Sunday, June 12 by Zach Rodes and the “New!Red Hook” tour.

Finally, architectural historian Matt Postal will lead tour goers on a sunset walk with “Gowanus at Dusk” on Wednesday, June 29 to examine the remains and redevelopment of the neighborhood’s industrial past.

In-person tours are limited in number and all attendees are encouraged to mask up. Some tours may make an indoor stop so be prepared in case masks and proof of vaccination are required.
