Balancing out some of the unhealthiness of the new Dunkin Donuts on the Southwest corner of Smith and Bergen will be a new health food store across the street. The awkwardly named “Smith Organic Market & Natural”, on the Southeast corner, is expected to open shortly and hopefully will survive longer than other neighborhood establishments like Currysource. We’re thinking this place looks surprisingly down-market for an organic store. GMAP

  1. Yeah, even though it was overpriced, I’ll miss Curry Source too. In addition to the curries, I occasionally purchased the spotted dick or treacle they had for sale in cans. Mmm. nothing like heating your dessert up in the can in a pot of boiling water. I’ll also miss calling it Curry Farce, when I was mad at it for being expensive or Curry Scarce when they stopped carrying certain items.

I kind of like the “downmarket” look of the sign.

  2. Anon 11:41, your concerns are well founded. Living above a restaurant is not ideal. There’s noise, not to mention roaches, rodents, etc. A couple of years back there was a kitchen fire at Caserta Vecchia on Smith St, and the tenants living above the restaurant had to move out because of fire & water damage.

  3. I’d be wary to live above restaurant on Smith/Atlantic or whereever these days… so many opening backyards to customers that you’ll have noise all evening from back of apt – not just from the street.

  4. not to go off topic, but this thread gives me a chance to ask a question that i’ve got about apartments above restaurants/delis.

i’ve looked at a couple of places on smith st. as well as atlantic ave. and not too sure about living above a restaurant.

i’m worried about roaches, rodents, fire hazard, etc.

any readers have comments good or bad?

It’s about the same look as Slope Natural on 5th Ave and St. Marks (?).

Still, good news for Smith and Bergen.

  6. I hope we never lose the mural on the side of this building…with the whale and the islands on it. It’s left over from Che Che’s…a spanish music joint/bar. Now THAT was a neighborhood institution.
